The use of molybdenum in energy projects from nuclear energy to renewable will add new demand pressures on moly over the course of the year. Prices on the LME have been steadily gaining already this year, increased demand will only add to these dynamics.
“Sell in May, and Go Away,” may hold true for minor metals such as molybdenum this year. However, recent moves by the Chinese and speculation on China’s growth numbers may be the true factors driving the molybdenum market.
Chinese firms now control 30 percent of the world’s Molybdenum reserves. In an effort to control the rising costs of steel production, China may be trying to control other minerals needed for alloys, mainly molybdenum. Also included, a market wrap-up of companies that stand to gain from a resurgence of steel demand worldwide.
